DWD Racing Shines in Gold Cup Historic Races

Danville, Va. (June 28, 2004) – DWD Racing had an outstanding result during the 2004 Gold Cup Historic Races at Virginia International Raceway over the weekend of June 11-13, posting the team’s best-ever finish.

Team founder Julie Allen, driving the No. 51 DWD Racing Austin-Healey Sprite Mk II, finished fourth overall and first in class in the Group C race. Her result marked the best finish by a woman in a mixed-gender race in the five-year history of the Gold Cup Historic Races.

“I am so proud of our team,” Allen said, “and thrilled to be the highest-finishing woman in the history of the Gold Cup. We have worked hard to make our car competitive, and I have tried to continuously improve my driving skills. It’s very gratifying to see our plans come to fruition.”

The 2004 Gold Cup Historic Races featured a Tribute to Women Racers, sponsored by Vintage Motorsport magazine. The tribute included the Vintage Motorsport All-Women’s Race, an extensive history display and a number of featured guests including Donna Mae Mims, Suzy Dietrich, Divina Galica, Audrey Zavodsky and grand marshal Denise McCluggage. For Allen, then the marketing director for VIR and event Gold Cup Historic Races organizer, it was the realization of a longtime dream.

“I have been involved in vintage racing since 1994, and it has always been my desire to create a tribute to women racers. Thanks to the efforts of the staff at VIR and the support of Vintage Motorsport, we were able to make that happen at this year’s Gold Cup Historic Races. It was an honor and a privilege to line up on the grid with all those great ladies, both professional and amateur, and I feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction at the way the weekend went.”

DWD Racing also debuted its new team logo over the weekend to rave reviews, prompting an entire line of DWD Racing clothing and collectibles that have been enthusiastically received.
