Danville, Va. (Aug. 26, 2004) – DWD Racing, a newly-formed Danville-based racing team, has filed an entry for the Stock Car Road Racing Championship (SCRRC) event during the Stock Car Spectacular presented by Hardee’s at VIRginia International Raceway, scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 3-5.
Team owner Julie Allen will drive the No. 51 DWD Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with sponsorship from Sleep Inn and Sir Richard’s Steakhouse and Lounge. Allen will be the only female driver in the race.
The SCRRC is a road racing series that utilizes Late Model Stock Cars that are exactly the same as the Late Models that fans flock to see at oval tracks all across America. They feature a NASCAR-style perimeter frame, a 360ci V8 engine limited to 400 rear-wheel horsepower, fiberglass or steel bodies, a four-speed transmission, a quick-change rear end and five-on-five or wide-five wheels with brakes limited to four-piston calipers.
For Allen, whose racing career has been limited to amateur sports car and vintage events, racing with the SCRRC will be a new experience.
“I love a challenge,” she said, “and racing a Late Model Stock Car on a road racing course certainly qualifies as that! VIR is my home track, so I have the advantage of a lot of experience on the circuit. The variable will be coming to grips with a car that is bigger and more powerful than I’m accustomed to. I will have a chance to test the car prior to the race, so I’m very confident. Most of all, this is going to be a lot of fun. It’s a great opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
The car that Allen will race is owned by local businessman Rick Jones, owner of the Sleep Inn and Sir Richard’s Steakhouse and Lounge, and he is equally excited about the car/driver combination.
“I’m probably going to get teased about the new driver in my car,” he grinned, “but I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people! Julie Allen is fast, smart and determined. I have absolutely no doubt that she is more than up to the task at hand. I can’t wait for this race, and we’ll see who has the last laugh!”
The SCRRC will have two practice sessions on Friday, Sept. 3 and one on Saturday morning, Sept. 4, with an eight-lap qualifying race at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday and the 20-minute feature race at 3:10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5.
