DWD Racing Scores Top-10 in Professional Debut

Danville, Va. (Sept. 13) – DWD Racing, a newly-formed Danville-based racing team, had an outstanding performance in its professional debut, finishing ninth in the Stock Car Road Racing Championship (SCRRC) feature during the Stock Car Spectacular presented by Hardee’s at VIRginia International Raceway on Sept. 5.

After mechanical problems prevented her from participating in most of the weekend’s practice sessions, team owner Julie Allen had a very steep learning curve to negotiate in piloting the No. 51 DWD Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with sponsorship from Sir Richard’s Steakhouse and Lounge, Sleep Inn, Sunoco and Powers Signs.  Allen, the only female driver in the event, drove a steady race after starting 14th, avoiding trouble and posting her fastest lap of the weekend mid-race.

“It was a big challenge, or to put it more accurately, a series of challenges,” said Allen, “but I had a blast! It was my first stock car race, and the car was much more powerful than anything I had driven before. Plus, the car was not perfectly set up for road racing, since it didn’t have a competition transmission, clutch or flywheel.”

It took an all-night effort from team members Mike Allen, Ian Harding and Les Young on Saturday to sort out the mechanical difficulties that left the DWD Racing entry parked in the paddock throughout Friday and Saturday, but their hard work and dedication paid big dividends during the race.

“Once the race got started,” Allen said, “the car was great. I was very frustrated at the lack of practice time, but after things got going in the race my confidence level perked up and we made some good progress. I was determined to prove to myself and everyone else that I could do a reasonable job and bring the car home in one piece. I’m pleased with the results, and am looking forward to the next opportunity.

“I want to thank the team for their hard work and perseverance, my car owner, Rick Jones, for believing in me and my sponsors for their support, without which this effort would never have happened,” Allen continued. “This is DWD Racing, and there is a Damn Woman Driver behind the wheel, but there are some Darn Wonderful Dudes behind the scenes who help make it happen!”

The SCRRC is a road racing series that utilizes Late Model Stock Cars that are exactly the same as the Late Models that fans flock to see at oval tracks all across America. They feature a NASCAR-style perimeter frame, a 360ci V8 engine limited to 400 rear-wheel horsepower, fiberglass or steel bodies, a four-speed transmission, a quick-change rear end and five-on-five or wide-five wheels with brakes limited to four-piston calipers.
