Danville, Va. (Sept. 4, 2005) – Julie Allen, driving for Danville-based DWD Racing, scored a top-10 finish for the second consecutive year in the Sunday’s Stock Car Spectacular at VIRginia International Raceway.
Driving the No. 51 DWD Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo sponsored by Sir Richard’s Steakhouse, Sleep Inn and Worldwide Racing Fuels (Sunoco) in the US LEC Stock Car Road Racing Championship event, Allen started 14th and steadily worked her way up through the field to finish ninth at the end of the 45-minute event.
The US LEC Stock Car Road Racing Championship is a road racing series that utilizes Late Model Stock Cars that are exactly the same as the Late Models that compete on oval tracks all across America. They feature a NASCAR-style perimeter frame, a 350ci V8 engine limited to 400 rear-wheel horsepower, fiberglass or steel bodies, a four-speed transmission, a quick-change rear end and five-on-five or wide-five wheels with brakes limited to four-piston calipers.
In last year’s inaugural Stock Car Spectacular, the DWD squad overcame a number of mechanical problems that hampered Allen’s practice and qualifying efforts to finish in the top 10, an outstanding result for her first professional race.
“This year’s race was a lot less stressful than last year’s,” said Allen. “We were fortunate not to have any major mechanical issues. As a result, we could focus more on driving and improving lap times. My race was reasonably uneventful, and I felt like I improved my skills with every lap. This is the same car I drove last year, and it is admittedly more ‘stock’ than the vast majority of the field, but I feel like I got the most out of it and was satisfied with my performance.”
This was the first outing for Allen since late 2004, and she admitted that it took a little while to get back into the swing of things.
“VIR is such a demanding track that you have to maintain total focus at all times,” she said. “It took me a few laps to build my confidence back up, and after that it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed myself, I appreciate all the support from my sponsors, crew and family, and I look forward to the next outing for DWD Racing.”
The team’s next scheduled appearance will be in the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association event at VIR over the weekend of Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, in which Allen will be piloting the team’s No. 51 1962 Austin-Healey Sprite.
